Frequently Asked Questions about the Lost Fjords Trek

Do I have to carry all my luggage during the Hornstrandir trek?

Yes, this is a none supported trek so you need to carry all your personal belongings, sleeping bag, mattress etc. We´ll divide group equipment between participants, mainly tents, food and cooking gear.

Is there any place I can store my belongings I don´t want to bring with me on the trek?

Yes, we can store what you like to leave behind at our office, located on Laugavegur 11 in Reykjavík.

How heavy will my backpack be during the trek? How much weight do I have to carry?

We assume that the weight of your backpack will be somewhere between 16 - 20 kg. You should try to select your personal equipment carefully, make sure you bring everything you need but don´t bring anything unnecessary. You need to be sure you will be able to carry your backpack without any trouble the whole time. A proper weight of a backpack should not be more than 15 - 20% of your body weight. Remember that after you have packed all your personal equipment you´ll have to add up to 5 kg of group equipment to the weight of your backpack. Keep in mind to leave some space for that gear in your pack. Of course your pack will get a little bit lighter everyday as we´ll eat some of the food every day.

How fit do I need to be for this trek?

Lost Fjords is a demanding trek so you need to be able to walk for 5-8 hours a day, carrying all your equipment in your backpack, approximately 20 kg. Average to good physical condition is required.

How experienced do I need to be for this trip?

No experience is required for this trip but you need to be in a pretty good physical condition as we will walk for 5 - 8 hrs a day and we´ll be carrying all our equipment in our backpacks. The trip is rated as a demanding trip. You need to be ready to carry a heavy backpack, sleep in a tent and deal with Icelandic weather conditions. You´ll also need to be ready for beautiful unspoiled nature and stunning views.

Who will carry my tent, food and cooking gear?

We´ll divide all group equipment between all participants, so everyone will have to carry their share  of gear.

Can you offer vegan food on your treks?

No, sorry. Vegan cooking is not possible.

Can you offer vegetarian food on your treks?

Yes sure no problem, we offer vegetarian options. But please let us know in advance if you wish to eat vegetarian food.

What should I bring to wear on the trip?

The weather is very unpredictable in Iceland so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Footwear:  First of all you need very good hiking boots, if you are buying new boots for the trip, please try to wear them a bit before going on the trip.  If you have not worn them at all before going on the trip it is likely that you will get blisters. We will be crossing some small rivers and streams so you need to bring wading shoes with you. We recommend that you bring sandals or shoes you can also use to give your feet a little rest from the hiking boots in the evenings. Good hiking socks, preferably a wool mix, no cotton.

Waterproof clothing:   We recommend 3-layer shells which are breathable.  Those can save your life in the rain.

First layer:  It is very important that the first layer is NOT cotton!! Because if cotton gets wet, it will stay wet and keeps you cold.  We recommend merino wool to be your first layer, whereas your body can dry the wool and although the wool gets wet it will keep you warm.

Second layers:  Any fleece, techno – or quick dry clothing is also recommended.

Footwear, waterproof clothing and first layers is what we emphasize but in Iceland you can also expect sunny weather so make sure you bring lighter clothing as well.  A down jacket is also nice to have to put on during evenings.  You need to bring head wear and gloves.

It is recommended that you put your clothes in waterproof bags, or that you will put your belongings in a plastic bag inside the bag you bring with you on the trip.

Can we book chalets instead of tent accommodation on the Lost Fjords trek?

No, it is not possible. In fact there are no public chalets in this area. The few that exist are privately owned.
