Mountain climbing day tour to the top of Mt. Kaldbakur, the highest mountain in Icelandic Westfjords. Available directly from Ísafjörður in Iceland.
Trip difficulty 3 out of 5 possible. Challenging.
The West fjords are characterized by a great number of mountains but none of them particularly high. Most of them have a flat top, a sign of glacier erosion from the last ice age. Real peaks can be found though and most of them are concentrated on the peninsula between the big fjords of Dyrafjordur and Arnarfjordur. This area is sometimes called the Westfjord´s Alps because of the resemblance to its European big brother. The highest peak is Mt. Kaldbakur, 998 meters high. It even reaches 1000 meters if you stand on top of the cairn which has been made by visitors at the top!
We drive from Isafjordur to our starting point in Kirkjubolsdalur valley, approximately 1 hour drive, and walk into the valley. We´ll slowly make our way up the hillside, following a ridge that leads to the top. The last part of the route is a bit steeper but the ground is firm and nice to walk on. From the top we get a panoramic view of most of the West fjords peninsula. On a clear day we can even see the Snaefellsjokull glacier to the South. We follow the same route back and then drive back to Isafjordur.
