Hike to the top of the historical Snæfellsjökull (1446 m) glacier in West-Iceland.
Trip difficulty: 4 of 5 possible. Challenging / Demanding.
Snæfellsjökull glacier is one of the most majestic mountains in Iceland, rising up 1450 meters from the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This famous volcano is clearly visible from more than 100 km away. Many poems have been written about its grandeur and shining white coat of ice and snow. The most famous story about Snæfellsjökull is undoubtedly Jules’s Vernes novel “Journey to the center of the Earth” where the entrance to the mysterious depths of earth was through a caldera at the top of it.
Everything about this trip is a great adventure; even the drive from Reykjavík to the start of the hike offers breathtaking views. On clear days the whole Vestfjord peninsula is visible and beyond the North Atlantic ocean the shores of Greenland can be glimpsed. The Snæfellsnes peninsula itself with its amazing mountains and beaches is a sight not easily forgotten. This is for sure one of the very best glacier hikes in the world…Not too hard but very rewarding!
After the hike we drive down to the sheer ocean cliffs of Arnarstapi fishing village and stroll down to the Hellnar alcove for a delicious Icelandic fish soup in a tiny café, only few meters from the relentless surf and pounding of the sea.
