This is an ideal family adventure in Vatnajökull National Park.
This adventure day tour will take you along the south coast of Iceland and into the Vatnajökull National Park. Vatnajökull glacier is located in South East Iceland and is by far the largest glacier in Europe. We will drive from Reykjavík to Skaftafell in an Express Coach and have lunch in the national park before starting our adventure on the Virkisjökull outlet glacier. There we will go for a scenic hike and feel the ancient ice under our feet and all around. High above us rises the massive Vatnajökull ice cap in all its magnificence, a sight not soon forgotten.
Using crampons for safety (metal spikes for the soles of our shoes) we explore the ice on foot and along the way we see spectacular ice formations, deep sink holes and rugged ice crevasses. Our specially trained, highly qualified glacier guides will tell you all about the Vatnajökull Glacier and its numerous outlet glaciers, that like Virkisjökull, descend from the main ice cap like frozen rivers towards the ocean.
From Virkisjökull we head for the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon on Breiðamerkursandur desert. This place is one of the absolute must sees in Iceland and there is no better way to explore it than on a strange looking amphibian boat! We´ll find ourselves gliding between huge icebergs, which constantly break off the glacier tongue of Breiðamerkurjökull, producing a wonderworld of ice, hard to describe with words. After our boat ride we stop for coffee and a warm Icelandic waffel with cream and jam before starting our journey back to Reykjavík.
Guaranteed departures on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 7:00 AM from June 10th – September 15th. The pick up is anytime between 7:00 and 7:30 AM* in an Iceland Excursions bus.

You can rent hiking shoes and/or waterproof clothing in Skaftafell: 500 ISK per piece.
Bring with you: Warm outdoor clothing, waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves (gloves can be provided). Good hiking shoes are recommended!
Distance from Reykjavik: 350 km. Duration of trip: Approx 14-15 hours with transfer from Reykjavík.
Please Note: All outdoor glacier trips depend on weather and glacier conditions. No minimum number of participants in June, July & August.
