Hiking Tours from Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park

Skaftafell is located at the foot of Vatnajökull glacier, the biggest glacier in the world, outside of the polar regions and by far the biggest glacier in Europe. This is an awe-inspiring place, with incredible mountains, "The Icelandic Alps" reaching up to the sky and enormous glaciers stretching out in all directions. If you are looking for breathtaking views, great hiking or unforgettable glacier trips, this is certainly Icelands top location.

Countless outlet glaciers descend from the main ice cap of Vatnajökull, all unique in shape, form and accessibility. We offer amazing glacier day tours on two of the most beautiful and easily accessible ones, the Virkisjökull glacier and Fjallsjökull glacier.

The Virkisjökull glacier tongue is only a stones throw away from the Skaftafell visitors center and we offer free pick up from there. In fact all our trips include free pick up from not only the visitors center but also Fosshotel Skaftafell, the campsite at Svínafell and the Frost & Fire Guesthouse in Hof. The Fjallsjökull Glacier is further east and there we offer more intense glacier tours where we spend 4 hours on the ice.

Our two most popular trips both combine glacier hiking with alternative adventures:

One combines the serene beauty of a glacier hike on Fjallsjökull glacier with an amazing boat trip among the icebergs on Breiðarmerkurlón Glacier Lagoon. Find out more about our Glacier Grand Slam.

The other combines a short glacier tour on Virkisjökull outlet glacier with a wildlife and history tour to Ingólfshöfði cape. Find out more about our Blue Ice Black Sands tour.

You can of course also choose a more simple trip and just go for a breathtaking glacier tour on either Fjallsjökull or Virkisjökull glacier.
